Unicorn This was carved as a graduation gift for Laura, my oldest daughter. The pattern is from Mary Duke Gulden's second book. Her patterns are usually cut in layers of 3/4" wood and laminated, but this is a single piece. I had a beautiful piece of butternut from a show in Morrisville, Vt. which I had been hording for about three years, and the pattern was actually enlarged to fully fill the piece of wood. Only the horn is a seperate piece for strength, and it's gilded with real gold leaf. This is easily my best 'horse', and probably one of my best pieces to date. Laura's one of my tough in-house critics, and it was a big success with her. |
